Frequently asked questions

Owners’ questions

From when can ultrasound detect pregnancy in a bitch?

At the earliest around day 21 after mating, and reliably from day 25 to day 28, when beating hearts can be seen. An earlier scan may give a false negative result.

How long can I wait before I call?

Strong straining with no result: 30 minutes. A gap between puppies or kittens: 2 hours if there are contractions, or 4 if there are none. Green discharge with no puppy or kitten following: call immediately. If in doubt, it is better to call too early.

Can pyometra be treated without surgery?

In selected breeding animals that are in good general condition and have an open cervix, drug treatment is possible, but relapses are common. For most bitches and queens, surgery is the safest option.

Can the testicle still descend on its own?

After 6 months of age this is very unlikely. We do not recommend hormonal drugs that are said to help the testicle descend: they are ineffective and do not remove the hereditary nature of the defect.
